Hormone deficiency can affect children’s growth, says expert

Manaus (AM) – Considered a rare disease, growth hormone deficiency affects one in every 4,000 children worldwide, according to medical literature. The condition occurs mainly because the pituitary gland (gland in the lower part of the brain) produces little GH (growth hormone in English), the so-called growth hormone, causing short stature, delayed teething and other symptoms. Fortunately, with early diagnosis and treatment for the deficiency, it is possible to treat and minimize its effects.

“Growth hormone deficiency can have various origins, from congenital causes, that is, we are born with it, to injuries, infections or tumors in the pituitary gland. [glândula que produz o hormônio]autoimmune diseases and use of some medications, such as long-term corticosteroids”,

Diagnosis of hormone deficiency in children involves a detailed clinical evaluation, blood tests and, in some cases, imaging tests, such as MRI. One of the first steps is to observe whether growth follows standards. In the first year of life, for example, the child should grow by around 25 centimeters. Between the age of three and the beginning of puberty, 5 to 7 centimeters per year.

“Medical monitoring during the child’s growth process is very important to identify GH hormone deficiency in the early stages, if any. Now, after the diagnosis, it is the doctor who will be able to identify the cause of the deficiency and indicate the best treatment”,

In addition to the lack of growth, other symptoms may also indicate deficiency. These include low blood sugar at birth, lack or delay in sexual development during puberty, a high-pitched voice and thin hair. When combined with other hormonal deficiencies, it can also cause excessive thirst, excessive urination and facial abnormalities, which are more rare.

Exam

When some symptoms linked to hormone deficiency appear, the doctor may also request blood tests to confirm the diagnosis. According to the biochemist and technical coordinator of Sabin in Manaus, Luciana Figueira, the test is carried out when there is short stature or a total absence of growth from the age of two.

“The diagnosis of growth hormone deficiency is also made through blood tests to measure GH (Growth Hormone) levels. The exam must be carried out fasting and under the supervision of an endocrinologist, who will monitor you throughout the process of collecting the samples to be analyzed. The result will be ready in four working days”,

explains the professional.

Treatment

Endocrine-pediatrician Pietra Moleirinho highlights that “with appropriate treatment, which includes growth hormone replacement, adequate nutrition and good lifestyle habits, it is possible to minimize the effects of the disease and promote adequate and healthy growth”.
