A Los Angeles court convicted the 70-year-old Oscar winner, who is already serving a 23-year sentence, for another sex crimes case tried in New York in 2020. The charges in Thursday’s lawsuit stemmed from an assault on a former model and actress, identified in court as Jane Doe 1, at a Los Angeles hotel in February 2013. He had already been found guilty in late 2022, of forced oral sex, rape and sexual penetration by a foreign object. For a month, the 12 members of the jury heard women, who at the time were looking to build a career in the entertainment world, accuse the movie mogul of cornering and abusing them in hotel rooms. The women, including California’s now first lady Jennifer Siebel-Newsom, detailed sexual encounters that allegedly took place against her will and under physical or psychological coercion. Prosecutors alleged that the producer exploited and abused women for years, benefiting from the impunity afforded by his position of power in the entertainment industry. The prosecution characterized him as a sexual predator who used his influence to pressure and abuse women, also taking advantage of his physical size to intimidate them. The defense, on the other hand, argued that Weinstein’s relationships were consensual and focused on the idea that all encounters were like transactions, with women seeking an opportunity in the competitive film industry, a sector in which their client reigned for many years. Weinstein, the powerful co-founder of Miramax Films, a US film production and distribution company, will serve time after serving his 23-year sentence for a sexual misconduct conviction in New York.
