Minister Fernando Haddad, of Finance, began to make the first nominations for directors of the Central Bank, with the nomination of Gabriel Galípolo for monetary policy this Monday morning (8). Galípolo is the “number 2” of the ministry and occupies the position of executive secretary.

In addition to Galípolo, Haddad also appointed Ailton de Aquino Santos, a career civil servant at the Central Bank, to the supervisory board. The two boards are chosen by the government in the monetary authority and the names were suggested by the minister to President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (PT), who authorized the nominations.

“Galípolo was president of a bank [Banco
Fator]is known to economists, has worked with me for many months, is a co-participant and co-author of all public policies that are being addressed to the National Congress”, said the minister.

Haddad also stated that it was the president of the Central Bank, Roberto Campos Neto, who suggested Galípolo’s appointment to the position. “I was at the G20, in India, we went to lunch together, and he was the first person who mentioned the possibility of Galípolo going to BC in order to bring together the Central Bank and Finance teams”, he pointed out.
