The import of five models of cargo tires is once again taxed at 16%, according to a resolution approved by the Chamber of Foreign Trade (Camex) and published this Tuesday (21), in the Official Gazette. The resumption of charging comes after two years of the exemption taken by former President Jair Bolsonaro (PL) to reduce the operating costs of road freight transport in Brazil.

According to a statement from the Ministry of Development, Industry, Commerce and Services, the measure was taken mainly to avoid production stoppages and layoffs at national manufacturers. “With the end of the tax exemption for imported cargo tires, the industry has already signaled the retreat in its dismissal plans”, he said.

In addition to resuming taxation on imported cargo tires, Camex also decided to recompose the rates on imports of plastic resins to 11.2% for the same reason. “The segment had already registered a stoppage in at least one PET resin production line, in Pernambuco”, said the ministry in a note.
