This Wednesday (15), the Government of Amazonas, through the Gas Company of Amazonas (Cigás), announced the investment of R$ 45.1 million in Natural Gas. The objective is to expand the number of consumer units (UC’s) benefiting from the energy source, expanding to more than 270 kilometers in 2023.

The announcement was made at the Manauara Thermoelectric Power Plant (UTE), located on the AM-010 highway, in the rural area of ​​Manaus. In addition to Governor Wilson Lima, the event was attended by the CEO of Cigás, René Levy Aguiar, state deputy Sinésio Campos and representatives of Companhia Energética Manauara.

Wilson Lima said that he intends to transform Amazonas into a self-sufficient state in the production of electricity from Natural Gas. He also commented on the construction of four thermal power plants in the state, which should be completed in 3 to 4 years, and which will run entirely on natural gas.

“There will come a time when the state of Amazonas will be self-sufficient in natural gas generation and we can even put it on the free market to start exporting to other regions of Brazil. We have been working to move forward on the GN issue. My great desire is to put Natural Gas to perform a social function, that it is serving the majority of homes, especially those who need it most”, he concluded.

Currently, the Company has more than 12,600 consumer units in the thermoelectric, industrial, vehicle, commercial, residential and self-generation/liquefaction segments, but the thermoelectric segment is the main consumer of NG supplied by the concessionaire, representing 95% of the distributed demand. by Cigás, and consumed, on average, just over 4 million cubic meters per day (m³/d) in 2022. The fuel is used in plants that generate electricity and supply the population of Manaus and the municipalities of Anamã, Anori , Caapiranga, Coari and Codajás.

Companies in the Industrial Pole of Manaus (PIM), malls, restaurants, gyms, laundries, supermarkets, residential condominiums, the Hospital and Emergency Room Delphina Aziz and five gas stations also enjoy the benefits generated by the use of natural gas distributed by the Company.

This year, the vehicular natural gas supply network should expand to eight gas stations. In addition, the “Faça a Conta. Use CNG!”, which has already granted more than R$680,000 in incentives for converting vehicles to use Vehicular Natural Gas (CNG), remains in force until March 16. Later this year, Cigás is expected to sign a contract for the implementation of a flexibility and operational safety project, through this contract, gas pipeline infrastructure will be built interconnecting the Aparecida natural gas distribution systems, which should start in the Aparecida neighborhood and continue to the BR highways -174 and AM-010, and Mauá, whose point of origin is in the Mauazinho district.

Advantages of natural gas

The main advantage of natural gas is the savings provided to users. In addition to being economical, NG is also less polluting for the environment than other fuels such as diesel and oil.

Another benefit of using this gas was the reduction of trucks carrying liquid fuel, thereby reducing CO2 emissions, reducing pollutants and improving air quality.
