The accounts of the Central Government, which brings together the Treasury, Social Security and the Central Bank, ended the month of May in the red according to data released on Thursday (29). There was a primary deficit of R$45.01 billion, 14.5% greater than in the same month of last year, of R$39.32 billion.

According to the National Treasury Secretariat, total government expenditures rose by 13.3% in the month, to R$22.2 billion (see full text). The main variations occurred in the reduction of R$ 10.1 billion in social security benefits and increases of R$ 5.3 billion in bonuses and unemployment insurance, R$ 15.7 billion in judicial sentences and precatorios and R$ 7.1 billion in flux control.

Total revenues increased less, by just 3.7% (BRL 6.7 billion) compared to May 2022, and reached BRL 186.3 billion. The variation was due to the reduction in the collection of Cofins, of R$ 1.6 billion, and increases in income tax (R$ 1.3 billion), other revenues administered by the Federal Revenue (R$ 1.8 billion), Pension (R$ 4.1 billion) and dividends and participations (R$ 3.3 billion).

In the accumulated result for the year, the Central Government accumulated a primary surplus of BRL 2.15 billion, less than the BRL 39.7 billion in the same period of 2022.

The Treasury also informed that the primary result of the Central Government in 12 months (considering the period until May 2023) is a surplus of R$ 18.2 billion (real values), equivalent to 0.18% of the Gross Domestic Product (GDP) ), and that the primary deficit for the whole year should remain below 1% of GDP.

“The idea is to close 2023 at a level well below the amount authorized by the Budget Law, which is a deficit of BRL 238 billion, or 2.2% of GDP,” said the Ministry of Finance in a statement.

Also according to the portfolio, from January to May 2023, Social Security registered a deficit of R$ 113.28 billion, while the National Treasury and the Central Bank presented a surplus of R$ 115.48 billion (nominal values), points out the report. .
