The “chatbot” Med-PaLM, an artificial intelligence application from Google that specializes in medicine, has passed the exam that allows you to practice as a doctor in the United States. Their results, however, were inferior to those of humans, according to a study published this Wednesday (12) by the journal Nature.
The launch of ChatGPT by the company OpenAI, with support from Microsoft, a competitor of Google, last year spurred a race between the technology giants in the field of artificial intelligence.
Medical care is an area in which technology has shown consistent advancement, with algorithms capable of reading medical tests more effectively than humans.
Google introduced Med-PaLM in a pre-published article in December.
Unlike ChatGPT, the system is not accessible to the general public.
Google says Med-PaLM is the first major language model — an artificial intelligence technique trained on large amounts of human-produced text — to pass the US Medical Licensing Examination or USMLE , in its acronym in English).
The exam that qualifies to practice medicine in the US requires a score of approximately 60%.
In February, a study revealed that ChatGPT had obtained very satisfactory results in the evaluation.
In the new peer-reviewed study published Wednesday in Nature, Google researchers said that Med-PaLM scored 67.6% on the USMLE multiple-choice questions.
The results are “encouraging, but still lower than those of humans,” says the study.
