The goal is to register addresses for 20 favelas by the end of 2023. The initiative will be carried out using the so-called Plus Codes, a digital address standard created by the company to function like the CEP. Thinking about it, Google announced this Tuesday (27) that it will map some of these regions with digital addresses known as Plus Codes. Plus Codes are a code pattern with letters and numbers that work like the zip code and help you find locations (learn more below). They are being taken to favelas, but are already available in areas that have already been mapped: for example, MASP, located on Avenida Paulista, can be found by code C8QV+CJ Bela Vista, São Paulo – SP. The initiative involves a partnership between Google and naPorta, a company that makes deliveries in favelas possible and will be responsible for mapping, and the NGO Gerando Falcões, which will promote the service to residents. Google’s goal is to map 20 favelas by the end of 2023, reaching 10,000 new digital addresses. The company expects to impact up to 40,000 people in this period and will start this stage in the Cidade de Deus favela, in Ferraz de Vasconcelos (SP), and Tubulação, in Poá (SP). In 2022, Google had already announced other partnerships to map three other favelas: Paraisópolis, in São Paulo, and Favela dos Sonhos and Itaprata, both in Ferras de Vasconcelos. How Plus Codes work Plus Codes transform latitude and longitude coordinates into letter and number codes. The pattern was created by Google and can be used for free by third parties. The feature can already be found on Google Maps, below the official address. In the case of the favelas that will be mapped, residents will be able to pass on the codes to friends or services that are compatible with the technology. Plus Codes already appear in addresses registered on Google Maps Reproduction
