Google added, this Wednesday (8), a response created by generative artificial intelligence, like ChatGPT, to the search results. In testing, the feature can be activated in Search Labs, where the platform makes new technologies available.
The test, called the Generative Research Experiment, has been underway in the United States since August. At the beginning of November, it began to be broadcast in Portuguese. Google’s generative AI platform, Bard, also arrived in Brazil months after launching in more than 180 countries and territories.
When activated, the artificial intelligence-generated answer appears at the top of the results, before any links to original content. The tab delivers a succinct response, as are the texts from ChatGPT and Bard. Google says that “generative AI can help you take the first steps in this search more naturally and intuitively.”
Interested parties can find Search Labs with a Google search; is the first link. The only option available for testing in Brazil is generative AI in research.
After activating it, the user can choose the option to test an example. Then you are redirected to a random search. In the case of the report, it was: “which way should the toilet paper roll be hung? Up or down?”
The answer is this: “According to the original document, toilet paper should be hung with the tip facing down. However, a patent created by Seth Wheeler 124 years ago reveals that the toilet paper should hang on top.”
The model also suggests other possible searches, such as “how tall is the toilet paper roll?”
Finally, the user can evaluate whether the result was satisfactory and, thus, help Google improve the product.
According to Google, the new function does not exclude the traditional search mode, with links. Still, the company claims it delivers reliable results, with responses designed to highlight sources of information.
Tests with generative AI will only be available on Android and iPhone smartphone apps next week.
