Google and Apple said on Tuesday they were working to curb unwanted tracking of people through Bluetooth devices such as AirTags, used to find lost items.
The companies have submitted a blueprint with specifications that will require all Bluetooth tracking devices to alert users of any unauthorized tracking on iOS and Android devices.
Inputs from device makers and various advocacy and security groups were included in the specifications, the companies said, adding that they have the backing of companies including Samsung and consumer electronics firm Tile.
Since the launch of AirTags, privacy experts and law enforcement have said that some people use them for criminal purposes.
AirTags should be inserted or attached to keys, wallets, backpacks and other items so that people can find them when they lose them.
In an effort to increase privacy, Apple released a detector app for Android in 2021 to help users scan for nearby AirTags or other trackers for similar items that they might have on them without their knowledge.
