Glória Maria taught us journalism, traveling and living well – 02/02/2023 – Guia Negro

Glória Maria was the first black professional to achieve great visibility on television and who had her own, unmistakable style. Reporter and presenter of TV Globo for decades, she collected pioneering works, being, for example, the first journalist to make a live link and jump with a parachute in a report. Not just the first black woman, but the first female journalist to be in many places and situations.

Her hair changed over the decades and her remarkable voice narrated what she saw around the world. I grew up watching Glória travel and interviewing celebrities. Who doesn’t remember the classic conversation with singer Michael Jackson on his visit to Brazil? Whenever she was on TV, she stopped to watch. I grew up in a black family, which carried racism with it, so every time the presenter appeared on the screen, the comment came “look, the neguinha, with hair like that or with clothes like that”.

She never got to be just a presenter, she was always ‘the’ black presenter. For many years the only one and, with that, allowed several generations to dream of being there, opening paths for a more diverse communication and with other narratives.

I’ve heard conspiracy theories that she knew the secrets of Tancredo Neves’s death, that’s why it was perpetuated at Globo, and also that she had slept with a director. After all, a black woman couldn’t be there for so long just because of her talent. But Gloria was there and she had enough genius for it. In journalism, she taught us lightness, precision, style and versatility.

But in addition to being a news professional, Glória was a traveler and a teacher in how to travel to unusual places, to destinations that were not on our radar. She toured more than 100 countries and made us all dream of having “Gloria Maria’s passport”.

He crossed the decades and entered the meme era with his trip to Jamaica. On a visit to the Rastafarian community he tried marijuana and rode a roller coaster. In the video, she shows the tradition and says it would be impossible to refuse. After taking a big bong, the presenter reports that she got dizzy and needed time to understand what was happening. The video went viral and became an eternal sticker on Whatsapp.

At the height of her career, with one of the most dreamed positions on TV, that of presenter of Fantástico, where she carried out the famous trips and interviews with celebrities, Glória decided to stop. She took a two-year sabbatical and adopted daughters Laura and Maria. She taught us now how to live well and that rest and time for ourselves is something that only we can set for ourselves.

She gave us many lessons and emphasized that in all these years she has never stopped being the target of racism. “I continue to suffer prejudice, it’s not something that ends. They don’t tell me anymore that I don’t do something because I’m black. Today it’s more subtle, more elaborate. get used to it”, he said in an interview with Marília Gabriela.

Another legend that involved the presenter was her age, never said, and always denied, in an attempt to remember that the most important thing was not that number, but the joviality that she conveyed. Glória Maria can be sure that she inspired entire generations and that on her last trip she leaves behind memories, but also many lessons. After all, “life is a mystery”, as she herself wrote when her friend Jô Soares died. Thank you teacher!
