Former Nissan chairman Carlos Ghosn sued the company for more than $1 billion in a lawsuit filed with Lebanon’s public prosecutor last month, according to a copy of the lawsuit seen by Reuters.
The lawsuit, filed on May 18, accuses the company, along with two other companies and 12 named individuals, of crimes including defamation, slander, libel and fabrication of material evidence.
A judicial source said the prosecutor had scheduled a court session for September 18 to start proceedings.
Contacted by Reuters, a Nissan spokesman declined to comment.
Ghosn, once a titan of the global auto industry, was arrested in Japan in late 2018 and charged with financial misconduct. He denied the allegation and said his arrest was part of a plot by Nissan executives to block a merger.
He fled Japan hidden in a box aboard a private jet in December 2019, heading to Lebanon, his homeland.
Ghosn was awaiting trial in Japan on charges of underreporting of earnings, breach of trust and misappropriation of company funds — allegations he has repeatedly denied.
After arriving in Lebanon, the former president said he was fleeing a “rigged” justice system and intended to clear his name.
