A small city in the Center – South of the state, where wine is the main source of income. Bituruna, which is located near Guarapuava, has more than 8 decades of tradition in viticulture in its roots. There, Casca Dura Grapes are grown, which produce exclusive Bituruna wines, the result of a combination of soil, altitude and local climate.

The tradition in cultivation and the region’s wines were recognized last year with the Geographical Indication (GI) seal, in the form of Indication of Origin (IP), which certifies the quality of a product or service thanks to its origin. A watershed for producers.

“With the Geographical Indication we entered the map of world viticulture. Officially, we are inserted as grape and wine producers, in a differentiated way. Recognition is the attestation that we produce with processes, techniques, good practices, tradition and love. That the wines made here carry provenance”.

Michele Bertoletti Rosso, president of Apruvibi and owner of Vinícola Sanber

The Geographical Indication seal attests to the unique form of cultivation and excellence in production. Nowhere else in the world are there wines like Bituruna.

According to the oenologist and president of the Bituruna Grape and Wine Producers Association (Apruvibi), Michele Bertoletti Rosso, Bituruna Grape and Wine Producers Association (Apruvibi), several factors determine the unique characteristics of the region’s wines.

The first is the grape variety produced. Casca Dura is a very demanding plant in terms of climate, soil and handling. The winemaker says that in several regions of the country it has not adapted and in Bituruna it has not only developed but produces an incomparable quality. “Our terroir is different”, she adds.

Other factors are local altitude and wide temperature range. “Cold nights, hot and sunny days in the summer provide a high phenolic maturation and high sugar content”, explains Michele.

To explain the differentials of Bituruna Wines, Michele points out that, in general, they are drinks with a high aromatic potential, due to the soil and altitude, balanced acidity and velvety body.

“Speaking of our Casca Dura, it is an aromatic white wine, with high intensity aromas of tropical fruits, straw yellow color with strong golden reflections.

But for those who cannot go to Bituruna, the four wineries that make wines with the Geographical Indication seal are: Sanber, Bertoletti, Dell Mont and Di Sandi. Due to their limited production, the wines are not very easy to find, they are sold directly to final consumers and specialized houses.

Michele, who also owns Vinícola Sanber, suggests that interested consumers get in touch via the websites and social networks of the wineries in Bituruna to receive their favorite labels at home.

According to Michele, despite a slight decrease in this year’s harvest, due to a late frost at the beginning of November, the fruits are very good. “The grapes took longer to be ready and as the nights around here are still cold, the grapes are accumulating sugar day after day. We will have great wines this year”, he celebrates.
