The NGO Gerando Falcões opened this Sunday (19) a campaign to raise funds for the purchase of food, clothes and mattresses to help victims of the rains on the coast of São Paulo.
Edu Lyra, founder of the entity, says that for every R$1 donated by people in the campaign, the cashier at Gerando Falcões will put another R$1. According to him, the NGO should contribute R$1 million.
“We want a lot of people to donate to alleviate this tragedy. It is an issue that all of society needs to be called upon. Brazil has to rethink and make cities more resilient to climate change. The lack of planning will kill, especially the poorest ’ says Lyra.
The help will be provided through a partnership between Gerando Falcões and around 20 social leaders who already work in favelas along the coast. Called “Tamo Junto”, the campaign will be carried out by the NGO’s networks and website.
The heavy rains that hit the region left a trail of destruction. The city hall of São Sebastião (197 km from SP) declared a state of public calamity this Sunday (19). According to the state government, in less than 24 hours, the accumulated precipitation exceeds 600 mm in some parts of the coast.
