Galípolo says that “it would be strange” to nominate the BC without aligning with the government

The executive secretary of the Ministry of Finance, Gabriel Galípolo, said this Tuesday (9) that his nomination for the Monetary Policy Board of the Central Bank followed the autonomy law of the autarchy. This Monday (8), Minister Fernando Haddad confirmed the name of Galípolo for the vacancy. The secretary also said that “it would be strange” if the nominee was not aligned with the government.

“It seems to me that the criticisms are associated with the idea that Minister Fernando Haddad and the president appointed someone who is in tune with the government, but it would be very strange if it were different, if they appointed someone out of tune with them. The provisions of the Central Bank Autonomy Law are being complied with, each incoming government will nominate its directors and it seems trivial to me that the nominated directors have some kind of alignment with the elected government,” said Galípolo at a press conference.

He pointed out that he has a “good relationship” with the president of the BC, Roberto Campos Neto, and with the institution’s board of directors. Galípolo preferred not to comment on the minutes of the Monetary Policy Committee (Copom), which decided to keep the basic interest rate at 13.75% last week. “I have a good relationship with Roberto Campos since the beginning, a good relationship with the board, which does not necessarily mean that everyone will think the same”, he said.

Haddad also appointed Ailton Aquino dos Santos to the BC’s supervisory board. The Economic Affairs Committee (CAE) and the Senate floor still need to endorse the names. Galípolo was asked if he had received any signal from the government to take over the BC after Campos Neto left, in 2025.
