From smell to holograms: 6G technology will bring sensory advances that could revolutionize human relationships, say researchers

Research on 6G assumes that, although it is very difficult to estimate the technology’s applications for the next decade, its development begins today. This is what Inatel engineering and technology researcher Hugo Rodrigues Filgueiras explains. “What we need to be is creative. So we prepare a network, prepare the technology and then comes the creativity of those who want to use it and then a new application that we cannot even imagine may yet appear”, stated Filgueiras. But, when predicting what will be developed, Filgueiras highlights sensory technology. “We notice some very different use cases, something that can even be a little too futuristic, like sensory communication, some smell of food when you call mom on the weekend”. Vice-president of research, innovation and development at the technology company Ericsson, Edvaldo do Santos is emphatic when thinking about the innovations that 6G will bring. “You can make fantastic gastronomic visits before you even choose where you want to have dinner”. “Imagine a lady who hasn’t been her daughter for over 20 years and has the feeling of having her beside her and smelling her. That’s what we’re talking about, bringing new relationships between human beings, between people “. Hugo Rodrigues Filgueiras is an engineering and technology researcher at the National Telecommunications Institute (Inatel) even more holograms. “In 6G we are already talking about holographic transmission. You can have terminals that place a person, a hologram of a person as if they were with you on a daily basis”. But, what about 5G? Edvaldo do Santos says that 5G, already in operation in Brazil and Campinas, will also be the basis for various technologies. He predicts that people will be able to control objects through brain or finger stimuli in up to 7 years. “By 2030 at most, this is a conviction, we will be able to control the movement of objects with stimuli from the human body and the brain.
