The educational approach goes far beyond just building robots, according to entrepreneur and pedagogue Jhony Abreu, creator of the EduMaker program

Founder of the startup EduMaker Brasil (an initiative developed in Amazonas, which has a different format and a structured pedagogical base for teaching technological education through educational robotics and maker culture), Amazonian entrepreneur and pedagogue Jhony Abreu points out that the knowledge acquired in robotics classes has practical applications in the students’ daily lives.

“They learn to solve problems in a logical and creative way, skills that are essential to face challenges in any context, from making simple decisions to solving day-to-day problems”,

According to him – a Master’s student in Emerging Technologies in Education at Must University (USA) –, several projects developed in robotics classes have direct application in students’ homes, such as the creation of home automation systems, allowing to control lighting or monitor the security. In addition, according to the pedagogue, students can learn to work with the use of applications and digital literacy, using informatics in practice.

For this, during classes at EduMaker Brasil, students work with a variety of objects, including circuit boards, various sensors, motors, assembly parts and electronic components.

“These objects allow them to create and program a variety of devices. In addition, we use the resources of Lego Education, which allows the use of several kits from kindergarten to high school”,

According to the project’s creator, the practical classes are developed in Learning Trails: the first involves learning with Lego Education resources; the second develops creativity using recycled materials; and the third track develops the learning of programming logic and algorithms through educational platforms and applications.

According to him, the opportunity to design, assemble and program their own robots or devices is exciting as they see concrete results from their efforts. “This tangible, hands-on approach [ou seja, ‘mão na massa’] it creates a deep engagement”, he emphasizes.

The STEAM approach (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Mathematics, in its acronym in English, which provides for the integration of knowledge from Arts, Sciences, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) combined with the BNCC (Base Nacional Comum Curricular) makes EduMaker classes engaging and stimulating, according to Jhony.

The entrepreneur and pedagogue comments that the main difference between EduMaker and other similar programs is its student-centered and project-oriented approach.
