Manaus (AM) – Reinforcing the strategy for preventing diseases related to the severe drought that Amazonas is facing, the State and Health Secretariat of Amazonas (SES-AM), through the Amazonas Health Surveillance Foundation – Dra Rosemary Costa Pinto (FVS-RCP ), offers a free course on Epidemiological Surveillance of Waterborne and Foodborne Diseases (DTHA). The 40-hour course is aimed at healthcare professionals and students. The objective of this training is to provide guidance on the prevention of diseases transmitted by water and food, in addition to establishing an epidemiological investigation standard for these diseases.
The CEO of FVS-RCP, Tatyana Amorim, highlights that, during severe drought, this training strengthens the equipment for health professionals who work to prevent diseases in the face of drought through the Municipal Health Departments (Semsa).
“With municipal health teams increasingly strengthened, basic care is also improved, which impacts the success of prevention actions for drought-related diseases, such as hepatitis, leptospirosis and acute diarrheal diseases; in addition to the adequate completion of notification systems, which is extremely important for the development of actions in the state”,

The head of the Department of Epidemiological Surveillance (DVE) at FVS-RCP, Alexsandro Melo, adds that the course guidelines impact more efficient health care against these diseases, from identification to forms of treatment.

Prevention
The use of sodium hypochlorite is used for home treatment of water for human consumption and is recommended, especially during this dry period, to make water suitable for human consumption, preventing waterborne diseases. This year, the Foundation distributed more than 3.9 million bottles of 2.5% sodium hypochlorite, used to disinfect water. The product is distributed to people who do not have access to the treated water service, free of charge, by Semsas.
