Sander Mecca, musician of the band Twister, success of the 90’s, celebrated a year without drugs. The 40-year-old singer has been hospitalized four times in a rehabilitation clinic and, according to him, has been in “a lipo year”.
“Thanks to everyone who follows and cheers for me! It’s been really hard to get a year clean. But it’s been wonderful. I’ve never been happier in my life! Be happy and don’t do drugs, people! Stay sober and face life head on it can be too wonderful.
I am living proof that there is life after drug use,” he celebrated on social media.
Sander became a father last year to 6-month-old Sofia. In October 2021, he spoke about his nearly 20-year struggle with drug addiction:
“I’ve been clean for 70 days and very happy to be sober. The last hospitalization I had, just recently, I was hospitalized for 45 days. What has helped me the most to stay clean is that I go to addict meetings every day chemicals. My disease has no cure, I have to accept it. So, I avoid risky places and situations”, he said in an interview with Rafinha Bastos, on the YouTube channel “More than eight minutes”.
At the time, Sander also spoke about the effects of drugs on his body: “My health is better, however, I discovered leukoplakia in my voice. My otolaryngologist (doctor) said that if I didn’t stop using drugs I would get cancer in the larynx. My stomach is a Swiss cheese, my lungs, a little bit… I have brain injuries, that I don’t need medicine anymore to avoid seizures. I became convulsive”, he said, adding: “Hold on, I can handle it, but now I don’t want it. I want and deserve a dignified and happy life”.
During the conversation, he remembered when he was arrested at age 19, after being caught with an amount of ecstasy, LDS and cocaine in a bar, in the early 2000s.
“I was condemned as a drug dealer, with four and a half years in prison”, he recalls, who was imprisoned for two years. “I got addicted to cocaine in jail.”
