Days after President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (PT) raised the tone of criticism against the Central Bank by classifying the Copom minutes as “shame” for maintaining the basic interest rate at 13.75% per year, the Minister of Justice , Flávio Dino, joined the chorus against the monetary authority this Friday (10).

In a publication on twitter in the morning, Dino said that the BC’s autonomy is not sovereign and that it is legitimate for the president to want to discuss the definition of the interest rate.

“Autonomy is not sovereignty. All administrative bodies are under the authority of the Head of Government delegated by the popular will. Nor is the presidential term unconditional and unlimited. With this legal framework, the legitimacy of the interest rate debate becomes clearer,” he said.

In recent weeks, Lula has been constantly criticizing the president of the Central Bank, Roberto Campos Neto, and the autonomy of the entity established by law for conducting the definition of the Selic rate. Allied base parties articulate to summon the leader of the institution to give explanations to Congress.
