Riolândia fish farmer Cláudio Masocatto says that he used to work with a 3×3 tank, with small cages that housed a maximum of two to three thousand fish. In total, there were a thousand cages that had almost 60 employees to care for them. After investing in technology and specialized labor, Cláudio chose to exchange the old cages for technological ones in which one cage is equivalent to 25 of the old one. Furthermore, the number of employees is much smaller, but productivity and financial return have grown significantly. Most of the work is automated. To remove the structure underwater, for example, air is injected into the drums that are submerged and, in a few moments, the cage is completely out of the water, making maintenance and cleaning of the tanks much easier. The feeding part is also automated. There are around 1,200 kilos of feed that are stored in containers called silos, at the top of the tank. Below it is a dispenser responsible for filling the tanks. He is the one who ‘throws’ the food to the fish. The removal of tilapia is also done technologically. Machines are responsible for carrying out the so-called fishing, a suction pump for the fish in the tanks, which pass through the pipes until they reach the nets. It is then weighed and placed on the truck to sell the product. Another fish farmer from Rubinéia (SP), Emerson Esteves, reports how investing in technology has increased productivity and animal care. In addition to automating feeding, handling of fish at the time of vaccination is also automated. In the past, the work was done fish by fish and the worker had to catch the animal and vaccinate it.
