Procedure on a cisgender woman paved the way for trans women to bear their own children

The first uterus transplant carried out in the UK has renewed the hopes of potential recipients wanting to have children, including transgender women. However, according to experts, there is still a long way to go before trans women can receive a uterus transplant.

“My opinion is that if there are transplants in transgender people, it is still many years away. There are many steps ahead. My suspicion is at least 10 to 20 years”,

said gynecological surgeon Richard Smith, who participated in the procedure performed on the British woman, in an interview published by the newspaper The Telegraph.

The first uterus transplant in the United Kingdom was performed on a 34-year-old cisgender patient (a woman who identifies with the sex she was assigned at birth), who underwent the transplant at Churchill Hospital, Oxford, in February. The organ was donated by her 40-year-old sister.

“So, she’s doing really, really well. She has started having menstrual periods and this means her prospects of having a baby are very high. She needs to continue on immunosuppressive therapy and be closely monitored and we hope to have an embryo transfer in the fall [primavera no hemisfério Sul]”,

In addition to the gynecological surgeon, the team responsible for the procedure includes around 20 people. The information is from CNN.
