First edition of Amazon Poranga Fashion invites public to dress up as Amazon

Programming takes place from this Tuesday (06/06), at 19h, at the Povos da Amazônia Cultural Center, in the Industrial District
Manaus (AM) – Amazon Poranga Fashion is an Amazonian event whose focus is to foster entrepreneurship and the creative economy in the fashion sector. The official opening of the program will be this Tuesday (06/06), starting at 7 pm, at the Povos da Amazônia Cultural Center (CCPA), Avenida Silves, Distrito Industrial. Entry is free.
The event has the support of the Government of the State of Amazonas, through the State Secretariat for Culture and Creative Economy and the Amazônia Association of Artistic Production, Organization and Incentives (Apoiar).
Parades, exhibitions, business circles and workshops are part of the program that will also include the participation of established names in the fashion market, in activities that will take place in the capital of Amazonas and in the city of Parintins. In total, there will be three parades, eight workshops, three lectures, a round table, an exhibition and several cultural presentations.
At the opening there will also be the launch of the exhibition “Arte e Povos Originários” which presents the history of human clothing, on the occasion – carried out by the Fashion Design course, at Faculdade Santa Teresa, in addition to performances by guest artists and musical presentations.
Representation on the Catwalk
Among the participants are some of the biggest names in the market, such as the businesswoman and designer of Biojoias, Rita Prossi; Vanda Witoto, indigenous leader and coordinator of Ateliê Deequine; Harim Feitosa, creator of the Soul Hara brand; Hadna Abreu, visual artist and curator at Manart Galeria; Melissa Maia, costume designer, with more than ten years of career; Amazonas Artisans Cooperative (Coopam) and Yrá Tikuna, founder of Ateliê Aikunatchica.yra.
For Amadeu Saterê Mawé, the artist who will teach the technique workshop for initiation into indigenous graphics, the event is a means of sustainability for the artists. “An exchange of knowledge and identity for fashion and expansion of culture towards this world of fashion as inclusion and deconfiguration of this colonial pattern”, explains Amadeu.
The artist’s workshop will address the concepts, meaning and mainly ancestral learning of each people through indigenous body graphics. “The idea is to aggregate together with relatives and share experiences in a space where indigenous diversity is highlighted and complementary. And learn”, emphasizes Amadeu.
The event will also receive three guests of honor: Maurício Duarte (indigenous of the Kaixana people, founder of the homonymous brand Maurício Duarte Brand). He debuted at São Paulo Fashion Week in a digital fashion show, held in November 2022. In May 2023, Maurício presented his collection entitled ‘Tramas’ at São Paulo Fashion Week, when he received a standing ovation from the public.
Also present will be Sioduhi, an indigenous person from the Piratapuya people, from São Gabriel da Cachoeira; founder and creative of Sioduhi Studio; co-founder of Abya Yala Creative; researcher and developer of the Maniocolor technology, a textile dye based on cassava peel, in addition to other activities. Participating in a virtual way in the round table “Rescue and Valorization of Ancestral Knowledge in Fashion”, the stylist Ronaldo Fraga, one of the biggest names in contemporary Brazilian fashion, with 36 years of trajectory.
Follow and Participate
In Manaus, the Amazon Poranga Fashion programs will take place at the Povos da Amazônia Cultural Center, Instituto Cultural Brasil – Estados Unidos (ICBEU), and at the headquarters of Ateliê Deequine, in the indigenous neighborhood of Parque das Tribos. The location of the parade to be held in Parintins, on June 29, will be announced soon.
training activities
To participate in the workshops offered, it is necessary to register in advance, and fill out the forms that will be disseminated through the social networks of the event (@amazoporanga). The other activities will be open to the general public, respecting the occupancy limit of each location. All programs will have free admission.
