Financial loss motivated betrayals in the fake news project – 04/29/2023 – Panel SA

Parties such as União Brasil, PL and Republicanos discovered that the betrayals in the vote on the urgency of the fake news bill occurred because part of their cadres envisioned financial losses for the networks that support Jair Bolsonaro.
For deputies who voted against the urgency –and who are also against the project–, Bolsonarist channels generate so much engagement and views that they ended up capturing a substantial part of ads outside of traditional media on YouTube channels, for example.
The size of this market is not known, but these deputies do not want to, in the words of a party leader who declined to be identified, shoot themselves in the foot.
Proposed by Senator Alessandro Vieira (PSDB-SE), the project defines duties for platforms, such as vetoing inauthentic accounts under penalty of a fine of up to 10% of the economic group’s revenue in Brazil, in case of non-compliance with the law.
