Feng shui explains how the decoration of ‘BBB 23’ instigates the fire in the playground that we love to see so much

Every year at “Big Brother Brasil” it’s the same thing: no harmonious decoration; the aim is to provoke stimuli. And from what we’ve seen so far, like other editions, the recipe is working. But how does housekeeping affect participants? To answer this question, we turn to feng shui, a famous ancient technique for harmonizing environments and people.

One of the precepts of Chinese teaching is balance: stimulus x rest; light x dark; hard x soft; straight x curves; full x empty; and, finally, yin (receptive) x yang (dynamic). The compensation between these complementary polarities in environments promotes health, good relationships and prosperity. But it’s not what we see in the most watched house in Brazil…

According to feng shui consultant and architect Aline Mendes, an expert at the Personare website, yang predominates in “BBB 23”, which activates the dynamic energy of the place: extremely bright lighting with a cold tone; many bright colors and varied shapes; mirrors in large quantities (see tips for using mirrors here); wide environments with many empty spaces. Excess yang stimulates action, enthusiasm and competitiveness. But this excess can lead to physical and emotional exhaustion, generating irritability and leading to fights – it’s fire on the playground!

To balance out a very yang-dynamic environment and bring in more of the yin-receptive polarity, you can add curtains filtering outside light; warmer tone, lower wattage lights, such as a table lamp; carpets and furniture filling the environment with balance; and soft colors (see here which plants and flowers are most favorable to each environment).

The balance between yin and yang doesn’t have to be exactly the same every time. Living room and kitchen could have a little more yang, while the bedroom needs more yin. Below, see an analysis of rooms at “BBB 23” made by Aline Mendes based on the teachings of traditional Chinese feng shui.

Desert room: warmth and stubbornness

It features softer colors compared to more recent editions. The predominance of earthy tones evokes stability and warmth. However, this excess of the Earth element brings the risk of rigidity, stubbornness, intolerance and also of weight gain and fluid accumulation. On the other hand, irregular and rounded designs on the floor promote a little more fluidity and can be beneficial. Bedspreads, in soft red or burnt pink, are associated with Fire. The triangular shapes in the print also represent this element. Combined with the predominant Earth, Fire gives the feeling of heat, dryness, aridity.

The small amount of the Water element — in the blue color and in the sinuous shapes of cushions and wall painting — brings a little relief and refreshment. Therefore, the tendency is for its occupants to sleep longer and be slower than those in the other room.

Room at the bottom of the sea: emotions and outbursts

It has an absolute predominance of the Water element in colors and shapes: blue, black, sinuous and irregular shapes. But this excess can bring out the deepest emotions, making people more sensitive. It will be much easier to talk about yourself and reveal secrets in this room.

As a side effect, abundant water in an environment can cause sadness, depression and crying spells. As this element activates kidney and bladder function, it can also increase the urge to pee!

The floor simulating sand, in Earth tones, brings some of the necessary stability to balance the exaggerated fluidity of Water. And the headboards, despite having the sinuous shape that symbolizes the Water element, have the pink color of Fire, slightly warming up the coldness of the bottom of the sea.

And the round bed, huh?! Unlike straight shapes, which bring stability, the rounded shape makes the energy move. It’s good for dating, but not so good for resting, which can lead to insomnia or restless sleep.

Leader’s room: from focus to authoritarianism

In the place, the Metal element predominates, with gray color and some rounded shapes. It promotes focus, goal planning and authority, but when in excess, it can trigger authoritarianism, coldness, aggressive communication, intrigue. And also cause stress, headaches and problems with the skin, lungs or intestines. The very white and bright lighting, as in the rest of the house, makes the environment very yang-dynamic and not very restful. But this is made up for at night, with the lights off and the privacy of the VIP room.

In the control area, we have the presence of the Fire element, with red and orange colors and also with the pointed shapes in the design of the floor. This element brings impulsiveness, excitement and fame. Emotional outbursts can compromise meticulously calculated planning while in Metal’s environment.

bathroom: relaxation

This room presents an interesting contrast of yin and yang. The raw stones, which become heavy in the environment, resembling a cave, are softened by the curves in the wall, bench and floor. Despite the inevitable difficulties of being shared by so many people, this is not a bathroom that tends to provoke discussion. Notice how the environment, completely covered in stone, on the walls and floor, conveys a feeling of silence, that everything is still… This is the stability of the Earth’s entrails. But what is the risk of this excess? Digestive problems such as constipation. And then there may be a participant spending more time in the reserved…

Room: movement and focus

The gray on the walls and on the sofa brings the sobriety of the Metal element. But it is broken by the extremely dynamic presence of the primary colors: blue, red and yellow, which in feng shui are associated with the elements Water, Fire and Earth. We can say that, in relation to the five elements of ancient Chinese technique, the room presents a certain balance, lacking only the Tree with the green color. But in terms of yin-yang, again we have an excess of yang. The diagonals and colored trails on the floor contribute to this sensation; the grouping of many boxes with different colors, materials and formats; the accumulation of objects on the shelves; the wide variety of pillows; the tables of different formats, heights and colors; prints and sculptures on the walls and doors. Even so, it is possible that the gray background, combined with spherical and metallic objects in the decoration, which also bring the energy of the Metal element, provoke a more focused behavior from the participants when they are in the environment.

Pool: irritability instead of relaxation

We usually associate swimming pool with relaxation, leisure, good coexistence. But at “BBB 23”, the scenario around it does not favor these results. On the one hand, stylized buildings convey the impression of the bustle of big cities. On the other hand, graffiti-style paintings that seem to have been done one on top of the other, with different colors and patterns, make it impossible for those around to relax. The effect, therefore, is one of agitation and perhaps even irritability.

VIP kitchen: competitiveness or generosity?

The room brings a very elegant combination of Tree and Earth, in its shapes and colors. The Earth evokes nobility, sometimes stubbornness or arrogance, and the Tree promotes competitiveness and impulsiveness, sometimes being able to be generous with those who end up going beyond what is necessary.

Kitchen xepa: lightness

It has a lighter look, with earth tones in lighter wood combined with gray (metal) and cool blue (water). The dining table, despite being long, has rounded ends. This facilitates harmonious conversations and interactions. Despite the scarcity of supplies characteristic of this kitchen, the participants will probably take everything lightly, without much stress.

Confessional: giddy energy

This environment always drives BBBs to extremes of euphoria or despair. The decoration of the confessional this year is reminiscent of a time tunnel, with an accelerated spiral movement. The high contrast of light and shadow and neon lights in random positions provoke an almost absolute dominance of yang energy. Impossible to stay for a long time in the place without feeling its vertiginous energy!

Submarine Academy: quiet energy

The living area attached to the gym simulates the interior of a submarine. It is decorated in sober tones of Earth (brown) and Tree (light blue). Some furniture and objects complement the environment with the dark blue color and the sinuous shapes of Água, combined with the reddish tone of Fogo on the armchairs. Metal is present in the circular shape of the table and the environment itself. This is one of the places with the quietest energy in the “BBB 23” house, and will be conducive to relaxing and renewing your strength. The circular shape and appearance of a submarine can favor the exchange of secrets and confabulations.

Balcony: comfort and balance

The veranda next to the door of the house has the presence of the five Chinese elements of feng shui: Metal, in circular shapes and in white and gray colors; Water, in the sinuous and irregular shapes and in the dark shades of blue; Tree, in the palm of the vase; Fire, in the red of the wall and in the triangular shapes of the decorative panel; and Earth, in the caramel tones of the wall and floor material. This is an environment that can bring comfort and balance to participants.
