Faustão: hospital receives organ and presenter undergoes heart transplant surgery

According to the doctors in charge, the surgery was successfully performed and Faustão will remain in the ICU.

The Albert Einstein hospital, in São Paulo, received, this Sunday (27), a heart for transplantation and, with that, the presenter Fausto Silva was operated on.

The hospital informed, in a medical bulletin, that it was activated by the Transplant Center of the State of São Paulo in the early hours of this Sunday, “when the evaluation on the compatibility of the organ was started, taking into account the blood type B”.

According to the bulletin, the surgery took place in the early afternoon and lasted about two hours and 30 minutes.

According to the doctors in charge, the surgery was successfully performed and Faustão will remain in the ICU, as “the next few hours are important for monitoring the adaptation of the organ and controlling rejection”.

An average estimated by HCor, a hospital in São Paulo that is a reference in the treatment of heart diseases, points out that the wait for more serious cases of heart failure can take two to three months for a heart. When the risk is lower, the waiting time can reach 18 months.

According to cardiovascular surgeon Edmo Atique Gabriel, in the case of heart transplants, there are two queues: a regular queue, of stable patients, who are not dependent on medication and who do not need to be hospitalized continuously; and a priority queue.

In this, patients have progressive worsening of cardiac function, reaching an ejection fraction below 30%, dependence on drugs to support blood pressure, dependence on mechanical devices to help cardiac function and signs of failure of other organs, such as renal failure who needs hemodialysis.

In a previously released medical bulletin, the Albert Einstein hospital team detailed Faustão’s priority for the procedure. The presenter was under intensive care, using medications to help with the pumping strength of the heart.

He was also undergoing dialysis, an artificial process to remove waste and excess fluid from the body, necessary when the kidneys are not working properly.

“In this priority queue, the chance for the transplant to happen more quickly is really concrete, since the hearts offered in donation will first be directed to patients in a more serious condition. In any case, even as a priority, there is a need for a minimum of compatibility between donor and recipient, regarding aspects of physical biotype and some immunological tests”,

explained Gabriel.

In Brazil, all organ transplants respect the National Transplant System, whether funded by the SUS, by health plans or paid by the patient.

However, each state or region organizes its own list and all are monitored by the system and other federal control bodies. Inspections are carried out to ensure that no person appears on two different lists and that no legal norm is disrespected.

The queue works in chronological order of enrollment, but is guided by other factors, such as severity and blood and genetic compatibility between donor and recipient.

According to the hospital, Fausto Silva had been included in the single line of transplants in the state of São Paulo, which is regulated by the Secretary of State for Health of São Paulo.

Brazilian and world statistics indicate a success rate in heart transplantation in the order of 50-70% of cases, with a possibility of post-transplant survival of 10 to 20 years.

The presenter has been hospitalized since August 5th.
