Father who had lost his 3 children to cancer dies – 08/13/2023 – Health

After losing his three children to cancer, the Ceará economist Régis Feitosa Mota, 53, died this Sunday (13), also due to the disease.

He and his children were carriers of a rare hereditary syndrome (Li-Fraumeni), caused by a genetic mutation that increases the risk of developing cancer by up to 90% of those who carry it. In Brazil, there is a higher prevalence of this syndrome compared to the rest of the world.

A Sheet reported the family drama in July last year. It began in 2009, when Mota’s eldest daughter, Anna Carolina, aged 12 at the time, was diagnosed with acute lymphocytic leukemia, which begins in the bone marrow.

Ana was cured of the disease, trained as a doctor, but in 2021 she was diagnosed with a brain tumor and died in December 2022.

Mota had his first cancer diagnosis in 2016, chronic lymphocytic leukemia, and, in 2021, his second, non-Hodgkin lymphoma, a type of cancer that originates in the cells of the lymphatic system.

Also in 2016, the middle son, Pedro, then 17 years old, was diagnosed with osteosarcoma, a bone tumor, in his leg. In the following four years, the young man would have four more tumors (lung, thoracic spine, lumbar spine and brain) until he died in 2020.

In 2017, the youngest of the family, Beatriz, was diagnosed with acute lymphocytic leukemia at the age of 11. She died a year later.

Mota had been hospitalized since July 31 at the Unimed hospital, in Fortaleza (CE), waiting for his condition to stabilize for a bone marrow transplant. Earlier this year, he reported on his social media his third cancer diagnosis, multiple myeloma.

“We discovered another disease there. We have already treated leukemia, lymphoma, non-Hodgkin’s, which are stabilized. But we have been treating them, they are not cured. This time, we discovered a multiple myeloma, which even affects the bones”, he said in a video. He had nearly 900K followers on Instagram.

The news of the death was given by the broker’s brother, Rogério Feitosa Mota. “Our warrior went to meet his children exactly on Father’s Day. May God have him, my brother! We love you very much!”, he published on his social networks.

“I never prepared myself for this moment because I was always convinced of Régis’s full recovery. It is a pain without size”, wrote Mota’s girlfriend, Mariella Pompeu, on the economist’s Instagram profile.
