Specialist warns people with comorbidities and kidney diseases
Manaus (AM) – Excess consumption of red meat, especially by patients with kidney function problems, can increase the risk of worsening the clinical condition of those who have developed these pathologies and also contributes to kidney failure, an alteration in which the kidneys lose the ability to carry out their functions. basic functions, such as filtering blood, warns Uro-oncologist surgeon at Urocentro Manaus, Dr. Giuseppe Figliuolo.
President of the Amazonian section of the Brazilian Society of Urology (SBU) and doctor in public health, Figliuolo points out that patients with problems in kidney function, such as recurrent urinary infections, obstruction of the ureters, kidney stones (popularly known as stones) and chronic, need to reduce the consumption of red meat, salt and increase the consumption of liquid, especially water – with the exception of patients undergoing hemodialysis, for example, who need to control water consumption.
This is because the kidneys are responsible for removing the additional acid consumed from eating red meat, increasing the workload of these organs. On the other hand, consumption of white meat reduces the risk of developing kidney disease, according to recent research.
“When the kidneys are not functioning properly, they can have difficulty filtering and eliminating excess waste products and substances, such as protein and phosphorus, from the body,”
highlights the uro-oncologist.
Cancer
He also reinforces that excessive consumption of red meat can increase the risk of forming new kidney stones in people prone to this condition. This is mainly due to the high protein content and other compounds present in red meat, such as purines, which can contribute to the formation of crystals in the kidneys.
According to Figliuolo, patients with kidney function problems may have a worsening condition when they start to consume a lot of meat. Still according to the uro-oncologist, when consumed in excess, red meat also increases the risk for prostate and bowel cancers.
A recent North American study relates prostate cancer and points out that men who consume a lot of fried red meat may have the chances of developing malignant neoplasm increased by up to 40%.
In addition, the consumption of grilled or barbecued red meat can increase the risk of developing the aggressive type of the disease by up to two times, according to a second study, published in 2011 by the University of California.
“I am not forbidding anyone to eat red meat. But, if you eat in excess, see a doctor to evaluate your kidney function, do a periodic prostate exam and routine exams indicated for each age group, such as endoscopy and colonoscopy”,
alert Giuseppe Figliuolo
