‘Elementos’ brings a cute love story, in animation without big surprises; g1 already seen

Pixar has flirted, time and again, with characteristic elements of romantic comedies in its animations to create striking couples in productions such as “The Incredibles” (2004), “Wall-E” (2008) or “Up – Altas Aventuras” (2009 ). But “Elementos”, which debuts in theaters this Thursday (22), is shamelessly assumed as a romance involving characters from a fantastic world. The animation has yet another show of images, good jokes, charismatic characters and a story that will certainly please the most romantic. But, unlike the films mentioned above, it fails to surprise or captivate as much as expected. In the region where the inhabitants of Fogo live, there is the family formed by the immigrant couple Brasa and Fagulha and their daughter, Faísca. Owner of a store that sells various products and food, Brasa dreams of passing his business on to Faísca when she retires. Until an incident at the store makes Faísca meet Gota, a young inspector of the water element, who fines the establishment. When trying to prevent the family business from being closed, Faísca asks Gota for help and, little by little, the two get closer. But, because they are of different elements, the relationship runs serious risks. The film explores the differences in the behavior of the characters well. While she has a lot of energy and a (really) explosive temper, he is more calm, emotional and cries over anything (literally). As he said in the song “Eduardo e Mônica”, by Legião Urbana, even with everything different, they have more and more desire to meet and live this relationship, despite not being able to touch each other. The scenes of these encounters are fun and delicate and make the audience buy into the romance between the two. The Element City in the film is a true visual spectacle, as is the conception of its inhabitants. An interesting detail is the design of the water beings, who have waves instead of hair. Water, by the way, is the best worked element of the feature, with a texture in lakes and rivers so realistic that it looks real. Another positive point is the characterization of the characters. The city is shown as a large metropolis, like New York, and those who live there have typical characteristics of immigrants. Thus, the beings of fire are very reminiscent of the Indian community, both in their ways and traditions (which have a Jewish hint) and in their way of writing. The film, by the way, is dedicated to director Peter Sohn’s parents, who were also immigrants. Although it does not have a great villain, the film shows that the elements even coexist with each other, but have certain prejudices between one group and another. Faisca’s father, for example, does not support water beings and this creates an obstacle between her and Gota. The idea is interesting and creates an identification with the more adult audience. Thus, the story unfolds without major scares or surprises, which can lead the most attentive viewer to predict everything that will happen from beginning to end of the plot. Something that even sounds disappointing, since one of the greatest merits of most of Pixar’s productions is precisely the care with the text to bring something more captivating and original. But anyone hoping to see something of the same caliber as works like the series “Toy Story”, “Ratatouille” (2007) or “Inside Out” (2015), will leave the cinema disappointed. After all, Pixar has accustomed the public to seeing great plots packed with jaw-dropping animations. In “Elements”, only half of that happens. Another problem with the film is that, apart from the protagonist couple and Faisca’s father, no other character is quite memorable. A good example of this is Turrão, a boy from the earth element, who is a friend of Faisca and should be the funny supporting character. But he is not very interesting and would not be missed if he were removed from the plot. Spark and Gota live an impossible romance in ‘Elementos’ Disclosure As it turned out, “Elementos” should not be remembered as one of Pixar’s great animations. It serves only to “comply with the table” and nothing more. Really memorable is the short “Carl’s Encounter”, which plays before the feature. The animation brings back the elderly protagonist of “Up”, along with his dog Dug, in an unexpected romantic adventure. It’s very fun, sensitive and gets your message across in a few minutes. It provokes more human warmth than the whole story between Spark and Gota. Better luck next time.
