The National Electric Energy Agency (Aneel) announced this Friday (27) that the electricity bill will continue without extra charge in February. The agency kept the green tariff flag activated, which does not add costs to energy consumers’ tariffs based on their monthly consumption. The green flag has been in effect since April 16 last year. The tariff flag system was created by Aneel to signal the cost of energy generation. At the end of every month, the agency decides the flag color for the following month. When the cost of energy production increases, for example, due to the activation of thermal plants (more polluting and more expensive), Aneel can activate the yellow or red flags level 1 or 2 — which represent an extra cost to the consumer. What is the additional cost of flags? Green flag (favorable conditions for power generation) – no additional charge; Yellow flag (less favorable conditions) – BRL 2,989 for every 100 kilowatt hours (kWh) consumed; Red flag level 1 – (unfavorable conditions) – BRL 6,500 for every 100 kWh consumed; Red flag level 2 (very unfavorable conditions) – BRL 9.795 per 100 kWh consumed; Situation of the reservoirs According to data from the National Electric System Operator (ONS), the level of the reservoirs in the Southeast and Midwest, responsible for 70% of the energy production capacity in the country, was at 67.90% until Thursday (26), a situation considered comfortable by the operator. For comparison purposes, the region’s reservoirs had 23.35% volume in January 2021 — the year in which the energy crisis worsened. Still according to ONS data, the perspective is that the reservoirs of the country’s four subsystems end January with levels above 60%. In the case of the Southeast/Center-West subsystem, the estimate is to end the month with 69% of capacity. According to the ONS, if this projection is confirmed, it will be the highest percentage recorded for the month since 2012.
