Workers

Dissatisfaction and the need for professional change have several causes

It is not uncommon to see professionals dissatisfied with their careers. Many even think about changing areas, as shown by the survey “People at Work 2022 – A Global Workforce View”, by the ADP Research Institute, which surveyed 33,000 workers from 17 countries, including Brazil. According to the study, eight out of 10 people consider changing careers.

According to the coordinator of the Entrepreneurship Center at Faculdade Santa Teresa and specialist in People Management, Communication and Career, Joziane Mendes, planning is necessary to make a career transition smoothly.

Joziane Mendes points out that dissatisfaction and the need for professional change have several causes.

“Often the person is very young and chooses the profession to please their parents or relatives. Some confuse hobby with vocation or are influenced by the media, with regard to the apex of some segments, as was the environmental area in the past, as is the digital influence today”,

explained.

According to the expert, regardless of the reason, it is necessary to understand that it is always time to start over and that the degree or career you chose at a certain point in your life cannot be seen as a lifetime contract. But, like any change, this is a process that requires planning and some care so that the transition does not become yet another professional frustration.

An example of someone who is following the career change process is the physiotherapist Ana Beatriz Rocha, who is now studying Fashion Design at Faculdade Santa Teresa. She says she comes from a family of doctors and, since childhood, she was influenced to pursue a career in the health field.

“It was something natural, I entered the Faculty of Physiotherapy and I really enjoyed the course. Up until that point, that was the career I was going to pursue. Fashion has always been something that called my attention, but I didn’t see it as a possibility for a profession”,

detailed.

Another example of someone changing careers is Samantha Martins Alves, a tenth-year law student. Graduated in Tourism and working as a civil servant, she decided to change and face new challenges.

“I chose Tourism at the time of the third year of high school. Much was said about the state’s potential in this area and how job opportunities would grow. I got to work in the segment, but while I was still in college, I passed a public tender. So, even after completing my degree, I ended up not continuing it”,

he said.

According to Samantha Martins, Law emerged five years ago, when she made the decision to hold other public tenders and most required legal knowledge.

“It was then that I entered law school and found myself. I could have accommodated myself, because I was already stabilized with public office, but I always wanted more. My plans are still to pass a contest. I recently received approval from the OAB, with one of the highest grades, and I am already studying for the other tests”,

declared.

Tips

The specialist in People Management, Communication and Career, Joziane Mendes, lists some tips on how to plan for a career transition. The first guideline is to build a financial reserve, because during the time of a career change, the person may start in the new area at a level below the current position, hence the importance of being able to count on resources to maintain the quality of life for at least least two years.

The second point is to network with people who work in the career you are looking for. “Probably, current career professionals will not be able to bring guidance related to the new area, therefore, tracing connections that can open doors to this new scenario is essential”, he stated.

Another recommendation is to talk to those who have already gone through the transition: many valuable guidelines and information can be acquired from people who have already experienced this change. In addition, in this conversation process, one of these professionals may become the mentor in this stage of life. The last orientation is never to close the doors, even if the decision to change the area of activity is irrevocable. The ideal is to say goodbye to the current job with all ethics, respect and a feeling of gratitude. “Keep a good relationship and a good image with everyone”, he guides.
