The lawsuit was filed by the heirs of songwriter Ed Townsend, who co-wrote the song alongside Gaye in 1973. In his first defense statement, Sheeran described his process of creating the 2014 song, written shortly after he began a romantic relationship and of his grandfather having died. “I draw inspiration from a lot of things in my life and my family,” Sheeran told the audience. He said his friend and collaborator Amy Wadge started strumming chords during a visit to his home in England. So they started working on the lyrics.
