‘Easy Money’ adapts a true story into a fun and satisfying tale of revenge against Wall Street; g1 already seen

The greatest merit of “Easy Money” is that it makes it seem, well, easy. After all, it is not difficult to fall into the countless traps of the details of the stock market, a mystery to most, without resorting to professorial or tedious speeches. In the end, more than presenting the episode to those unfamiliar with it, the film serves as a relaxed crescendo of absurdities until the inevitable catharsis. As the title already makes more or less clear (at least for those who know what a “short squeeze” is), this is the real episode of 2021, when thousands of small investors – ordinary people, with varied jobs and mortgages – came together to buy millions of shares in a game store chain, GameStop. Which in turn caused the company’s value to skyrocket in the market, and caused billions of dollars in losses for investment funds that had bet on its imminent – ​​and, for all intents and purposes, accurate – collapse. The script written by Lauren Schuker Blum and Rebecca Angelo (who worked together on “Orange is the new black”) from the beginning is less interested in what would be a “short squeeze” and focuses on the human side. It may not necessarily be what actually happened – but it doesn’t need to be. While documentaries don’t actually need exemption (something that many people get confused about), the only primary commitment in a film like this is with entertainment. An objective that, with the help of the light hand of director specializing in true stories Craig Gillespie (“I, Tonya”) and a sharp soundtrack, “Easy Money” achieves with ease. Paul ‘ordinary guy’ Dano Another success is, as in the book, telling the story from the point of view of those involved. Most of them, small investors who risked their savings during the pandemic and who then – whether for a bigger profit or even revenge – refused to sell their shares. At their center, the YouTuber who, in a way, started the movement. With him, Paul Dano (“Batman”), one of the great actors of his generation, proves that he deserves to receive more “ordinary people” roles. But in “Easy Money”, Dano stands as the heart and soul. Without him, it would be easy to despise the half-assed father who records videos on the internet with kitten memes and investment tips in the basement of his house. The actor makes his magnetism unquestionable. Alongside Pete Davidson (“Saturday Night Live”), who competently repeats his only drugged and crazy character, Dano is the great emotional anchor. And its importance becomes greater with the lack of weight of other investors. A debt-ridden nurse (America Ferrera), a GameStop employee (Anthony Ramos), two college students (Myha’la Herrold and Talia Ryder). All fundamental to the plot, but explored so in passing that they seem like just characters in a report. Vincent D’Onofrio in a scene from ‘Easy Money’ Disclosure The other side On the other side, Seth Rogen (another one from “The Fabelmans”), Nick Offerman (“Parks & Recreation”), Vincent D’Onofrio (“Daredevil”) and Sebastian Stan (“The Falcon and the Winter Soldier”) have an easier time as the billionaires everyone loves to hate. Everyone is great, of course, but we have to agree that it’s not that difficult to root against a bunch of men who act as if they rule the world (because, on many levels, they do, in a way, control it). Without them, however, “Easy Money” would not have the same effect. Someone who overdoes the drama or caricature (something that Stan, by far the weakest of the four actors, comes dangerously close to) could ruin everything. It is inevitable not to compare the film with “The Big Short” (2015), which portrayed (and explained, with a Margot Robbie in the bathtub) the great American real estate crisis of the 2000s. But, without so much interest in details and with a more comfortingly, “Easy Money” manages to stand on its own merits. In a double session, the recommendation is that the newest production be left for later, to get the bad taste out of your mouth with a bit of good old catharsis.
