The highlight of the day in the markets are the new economic data in China and the expectation for more results from the corporate earnings season in the United States. In the Asian country, figures for economic growth, industrial activity, retail sales and unemployment rate will be released later, but Chinese Prime Minister Li Qiang anticipated information in a speech at the Davos Forum in Switzerland. According to him, China’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP) grew by around 5.2% in 2023, a result that, if confirmed, is above the government’s projections of a 5% increase. However, the number displeases the market because it demonstrates weakness in the world’s second largest economy and sheds light on the difficulties the country faces in continuing to grow. This is because, excluding the pandemic years, this 5.2% represents China’s lowest growth since 1990, according to the Reuters news agency. In the United States, attention is on the release of results from the banks Goldman Sachs and Morgan Stanley, which could provide a sign of how the country’s economy is doing. The international political scenario of the United States also raises concern after the missile attack carried out by Iran near the American consulate in Iraq yesterday.
