After winning in the category of Best Film by the Public Vote at Mostra XIII Brazilian Film Festival, in Chicago, in 2022, the feature film arrives in Brazilian cinemas through distribution by Elo Studios. The movie brings archive footage and interviews with personalities such as Rappin’ Hood, Salloma Salomão, Raul Gil, Roberta Miranda, Bruno Baronetti, Hermeto Pascoal and Zuza Homem de Mello – in one of the last records of the musicologist, who died in 2020. singer’s children, Luciana Mello and Jair Oliveira, her brother Jairo Rodrigues and his wife, Claudine Rodrigues, also share memories lived by his side. At the director’s invitation, Jairzinho plays his father in several important and reflective passages in the documentary.
Born in a sugarcane field in Igarapava (SP), in 1939, Jair worked in the fields until he was 10 years old. Before pursuing his dream of being a singer, he worked as a shoe shiner and a tailor – he even played a sertaneja duo with his brother, becoming jair and jairo. But he soon conquered the country with his irreverence and musical power.
The feature walks between striking moments of Jair as presenter on the show fine da bossa, alongside Elis Regina; The interpretation of the song shot, by Geraldo Vandré and Theo de Barros; to his artistic freedom in the midst of military dictatorshipwhen he seemed not to take a position on politics and not talk about racism: “Jairzão was not an artist who showed himself to be militant, but between the lines, militated“, says Rappin’ Hood in testimony to the film.
