In times of gourmetization, it is rare among today’s bakeries to have one that adopts the concept of serving the neighborhood. Even though its production is signed by a specialist, this is the case of Na Janela, which opened at the end of November, in Higienópolis.

As the name explains, it is basically made up of a showcase that also functions as a counter — where the customer pays, places and collects the order. It’s a kind of big window surrounded by other local businesses, such as a barber shop, very close to the Higienópolis shopping mall. A lean street business, common in cities like Paris, which is starting to become popular as an alternative in São Paulo as well.

It’s not difficult to see journalist Luiz Américo Camargo there, a partner alongside businessmen Fábio Kow and Marie Camicado, famous among home bakers for teaching tricks on social media and signing books that have become classics on the subject, “Pão Nosso” (2013; 178 pages) and “Direto ao Pão” (2019; 216 pages), both from Panelinha/Senac.

Some of these recipes are offered at the bakery, which has most of its production naturally fermented. When he is there, Luiz Américo himself, who was a restaurant critic for the newspaper O Estado de S. Paulo, presents everything to whoever approaches.

To take home, there is, for example, 100% wholemeal bread (R$ 23.90); the cane (R$ 9.90), a revision of the baguette that takes us back to old bakeries; and the very cute shokkupan, good to eat with jam or make a sandwich (from R$4.90 to R$35, depending on the format). Airy pieces of focaccia (R$ 12.90) are also candidates for entering the customer’s bag.

With the window full, even those who go with the intention of taking bread home feel the urge to sit on the stool where they can also see the production, with batches coming out in the morning and afternoon.
You can order items such as croissant (R$ 10), cinnamon roll (R$ 12), cookie (R$ 10) and cheese bread (R$ 5.90) ​​— some of them sold as a combo that includes brewed coffee. There are also recipes designed for the Jewish community, which has a strong presence in the region, such as beigale (R$ 3.90) and challah, sold on Fridays.

The bakery plans to offer slices of naturally fermented bread on the grill and sandwiches, to serve lunch time.

Before you go, right next to the cashier, there are jams, which can be added to takeaway bread, as well as artisanal pasta from the Due Grani brand, run by José Barattino, who was a chef at the restaurant at the Emiliano hotel and the Italian Eataly complex.
