Taking advantage of the fact that cooperativism is the theme of the next 9 o’clock soap opera, Globo Rural went to meet Coamo, founded in Paraná 53 years ago by farmers who came together to increase production. To show how this model works, Globo Rural visited Coamo – Cooperativa Agrícola de Campo Mourão –, in Paraná, founded 53 years ago, and which has already spread across Santa Catarina and Mato Grosso do Sul. The farmers who founded Coamo decided to join together to be able to buy inputs cheaper and in greater volume, in addition to earning more from sales. At the time, they were taking a lot of cerealist defaults. Coamo started with less than 80 people and today has 31,000 members. In 2022, it earned BRL 28 billion. Coamo gained relevance in the grain market after expanding to MS How a cooperative works This is how a cooperative works: farmers unite to buy fertilizers, seeds and fertilizers. And they have a bank to finance inputs and machines. With this union, they are also able to offer technical assistance to producers, store grains and guarantee commercialization in the market. As a cooperative, Coamo went one step further and started investing in research five years after its founding. The group installed an experimental farm, in partnership with universities and Embrapa. The innovations that come out of there are passed on to the cooperative members, such as plant varieties, the right time to sow, fertilization, among others.
