Deputy wants BC president banned from doing politics – 02/22/2023 – Panel SA

Deputy Eduardo Bismarck (PDT-CE) presented a bill that calls for the prohibition of party-political activities by the president and directors of the Central Bank.
According to the proposal, taken to the Chamber by the parliamentarian before Carnival, the top monetary authority is prohibited from supporting or criticizing candidates, leaders and parties.
The deputy claims that the BC has autonomy to meet goals without government interference, including with mandates in cycles opposite to those of the President of the Republic, but criticizes the alleged connection of Roberto Campos Neto, president of the body, to Bolsonarism.
“If the BC needs autonomy in relation to the government to make its decisions in a neutral way, it is assumed that its directors —and, mainly, its president— should not have any kind of political-partisan involvement. This is not the case, however. , which is observed in the conduct of President Roberto Campos Neto, since there are several indications of his close relationship with former President Jair Bolsonaro”, argues the deputy in defense of the proposal.
Bismarck cites an article from Sheet which revealed the presence of Campos Neto in a WhatsApp group of former Bolsonaro ministers. He also mentions the BC president’s participation in Bolsonarist events and questions the use of the selection’s shirt, symbol of the former president, to vote last year.
Sought by Panel SA, BC declined to comment.
