But the duo’s flagship at Lolla’s show will be playing funk, a genre that is always present in the duo’s set. “The fun is carrying funk, because it’s our national genre, 100% Brazilian. It’s also a way for us to defend our work abroad”, says Paulo Vitor. “Since the beginning, it was in Brazilian music that we, in a way, sought a bit of the sound. The purpose is to democratize access to electronic music and, mainly, to give opportunity to new DJs. The first ones took place in the center of São Paulo and attracted a thousand people, according to the DJs. Asked if they feel that the electronic music scene is elitist and racist, the answer is direct: “There are a lot of white people in the game, especially white people who want to label us. Our role is precisely to provoke, question and mainly occupy these spaces. Occupy , persist and spread the word in the best way. We are resistance even in that”, explains Paulo. At Lollapalooza, this is also clear. Of the 30 attractions on the electronic stage, only four are made up of black people, less than 15%. “It’s not enough. This just shows how much the movement is with us, you know? It’s not enough for us to just be talented, we have to be beautiful, we have to deliver twice as much, triple, 10x more to reach the spaces where we are arriving” , says Paul. “I especially ask curators to be more open and willing to listen to other artists who are not in the same bubble. It’s easy to be enchanted by the charts, but go to our party and meet the other DJs who play…”, advises. Matheus adds: “I hope the number increases more and more. I wanted the line to be almost all [preto], there is no such possibility, but the number has to grow”. That’s why the opportunity to play at the festival is so celebrated.
