“Manaus + Agro” aims to promote the cultivation of cassava stalks, which will benefit more than 200 farmers

Manaus (AM) – In the quest to boost the local economy, the mayor of Manaus, David Almeida, started this Wednesday (12) to promote the cultivation of cassava stalks, which will benefit more than 200 farmers from the different rural centers of the capital amazonense, both from the riverside region and from the road. The action was coordinated by the Municipal Secretary of Agriculture, Supply, Center and Informal Commerce (Semacc).

During his speech, David Almeida explained that agroindustry in Manaus currently needs to import starch from other states. For this reason, the city hall is partnering with the producers, so that this income stays in the city and moves the rural economy, generating new jobs and opportunities for those residents of the most remote areas of the Amazonian capital.

“We are delivering more than 100 thousand seedlings and this production will be acquired by this agroindustry, which will benefit and be able to use this product in the city of Manaus. We consume a lot of tapioca, starch, and we don’t have enough production to supply the city of Manaus. For this reason, the city hall is working with this production chain, through Semacc, so that we can provide the rural producer with the raw material and also with implements, so that he can have a good production and flow, and have his improved income”,

emphasizes Almeida.

In addition to the seedlings, Mayor David Almeida also signed, during the event, the use and cooperation assignment agreement referring to the “Flour House” 2023 kits, containing a generator set, grater, a press, a roaster, a water, a mechanical scale and an oven. All communities will have their spaces renovated to receive the equipment.

For the head of Semacc, Wanderson Costa, the action marks a new cycle in the history of Manaus, as producers are being respected and listened to by the current municipal management.

“It is a moment of great importance, of great relevance for the city of Manaus, especially for the rural area. I feel very happy to be part of this movement, which is making history. Mayor David Almeida, with his background in fairs and markets, has a sensitive eye for listening to where it all begins, being in the rural area. Therefore, when we presented this project, he immediately embraced it and entrusted us with changing the reality of these families and that is exactly what we are starting to do here. I have no doubt that in the very near future, we will see the fruits of this production in our State”,

said Costa.

Cassava

Cassava, a food that is present on the table of approximately 700 million people, according to data from the Ministry of Agriculture, has a high energy value and is widely consumed in the State. In addition, it is also used in animal feed and in the manufacture of a series of by-products, but for the North region, it is part of the culture and food security of the majority of the population, mainly the traditional peoples.

In this sense, this crop is of great economic importance to Brazil, and Manaus begins, not only with promotion to increase cassava production, in which it is expected to harvest through this promotion of stalks, more than 100 tons of roots, which will be transformed in the most diverse cassava by-products such as flour, gum and pé de moleque.
