Cup of Excellence: coffee from MG is voted the best in Brazil – 10/28/2023 – Café na Prensa

Coffees from Minas Gerais and São Paulo were chosen this Saturday (28) as the best in Brazil at the Cup of Excellence, the most important competition in the sector in the world.

The award annually chooses the coffees with the highest sensorial quality in Brazil – that is, the tastiest and most scored, according to blind tastings carried out by specialized judges (see below for details on how this choice is made).

A batch of coffee from the Rio Verde farm, owned by Ipanema Agrícola, located in Conceição do Rio Verde, in Mantiqueira de Minas, won in the wet category, which involves peeled, pulped or demucilated cherry coffees. She achieved a score of 92.15 – the highest score in the competition, among all categories.

A coffee from the Fazenda Rainha farm, in São Sebastião da Grama (SP), in the Volcanic Region, was the champion in the dry category, focused on coffees harvested and dried with the skin. The property belongs to Orfeu Cafés Especiais.

Finally, the Rio Verde farm was also the champion of the experimental category, which is new this year. This award is intended for beans that have undergone an induced fermentation process, and emerged as a response to the growing demand for these coffees, which have more exotic flavors and have gained a lot of space in the market.

The winning coffees are sold in a competitive auction, in which producers are able to sell the beans for prices well beyond those practiced in the conventional market.

In 2018, for example, the champion achieved the highest value paid for a bag of coffee in the country: R$73 thousand.

This year’s auction will take place in December. Many of the companies that purchase these award-winning coffees are foreign, which is why many of the coffees may not be accessible to Brazilian consumers.

Some coffees, however, can be sold by roasters and coffee shops in Brazil. Orfeu, for example, which is the owner of the Rainha farm, informed the Coffee in the Press which intends to make this winning batch, of the geisha variety, available next year.

HOW THE CHOICE IS MADE

The best coffees are chosen through blind evaluation. In the last stage of the competition, 20 certified judges from around the world taste the finalist coffees following international coffee evaluation protocols.

They evaluate issues such as sweetness, acidity and the complexity of sensory notes in general, to assign a final score on a scale of 0 to 100.

The Cup of Excellence is an international competition – the most respected in the sector in the world. The Brazilian stage is organized by BSCA (Brazilian Specialty Coffee Association) and Apex (Brazilian Export and Investment Promotion Agency).
