Cruise ships brought 13,000 tourists to Manaus

The tourist sector of Manaus enhances the opening of jobs and income for the population

Manaus (AM) — During the “Cruise Season 2022/2023” more than 13,000 tourists passed through Manaus aboard luxury ships. From October 2022 until the first half of April this year, the capital of Amazonas received 12 vessels. The reception of tourists was promoted by the Municipality of Manaus, through the Municipal Foundation of Culture, Tourism and Events (Manauscult), together with the Government of Amazonas, via the State Tourism Company (Amazonastur).

On average, Manaus received the visit of three ships per month, with December being the month that received the highest number of tourists, 4,612 thousand on two different cruises. This season’s biggest ship, the Volendam from Holland America, arrived in Manaus on December 1, 2022, with 2,365,000 cruise passengers on board.

“We expected a natural recovery after the difficult period we had for tourism, but we need to be active in this process, as a way to boost this repressed demand for almost three years”,

said the mayor of Manaus, David Almeida.

“When we present the city to the tourist, we try to make him create a bond, to get to know and fall in love with the local identity, so that, who knows, he may come back in the future. It is not enough just to open the doors, we need to offer comfort”, he added.

As a way to maximize gains from tourism, the city has been working on receptions that include indigenous rituals, presentation of boi-bumbá, delivery of city maps at the port and itinerary tips at the Tourist Service Centers (CATs). The objective is, in addition to encouraging the economy, to present Brazilian and Amazonian culture to foreigners.

“The tourist sector in Manaus represents a fundamental and potentially valuable element of employment and income for the population. It is an activity that encompasses several pulsating sectors in the same region: gastronomy, crafts, culture, history and natural beauties, providing employment opportunities for many people. And, following the determination of Mayor David Almeida, we will work to transform tourism into a driving force for our city’s economy”,

highlighted the CEO of Manauscult, Osvaldo Cardoso.

Of the 12 vessels that remained anchored near the city’s port during this period, three visited the Amazonian capital for the first time: Insignia, Volendam, Ocean Explorer. Together, the three ships brought more than 3,818,000 tourists to the city.

The director of tourism at Manauscult, Evilázio Nascimento, commented that for the next season, 34 stopovers are planned in Manaus. Which will represent a 100% increase compared to the current season.

“Before the Covid-19 pandemic, in the 2019/2022 Cruise Season, a total of 17,428 thousand tourists, including passengers and crew, passed through Manaus in a period of seven months. In June of this year, we will present the final balance of the 2022/2023 season, which will allow us to have a qualitative analysis of the tourist satisfaction index in relation to the reception, leisure options, gastronomy, telephony, signaling and public cleaning”,

The delivery of bilingual maps and artistic intervention are one of the actions during the reception, in addition to the delivery of regional handicrafts to all disembarking tourists and the “Welcome” sign to the captains of ships arriving in the city for the first time.

The last ship of this season, the Silver Shadow, will arrive in Manaus on May 14th, with 694 tourists, with an average expenditure of US$80 per day, which will represent an injection of R$280,376.00 in the economy.
