In full expansion of energy generation projects outside Rio Grande do Sul, the Alto Uruguai Regional Electrification Cooperative (Creral) announced to its associates this week the investment plan foreseeing R$ 25 million in contributions in the State in 2023. Overall, the cooperative intends to disburse R$ 100 million in investments in the year – the largest portion destined for works in Santa Catarina. The information is contained in the 2023 Yearbook of Investments of Jornal do Comércio.

“We had a period of very great growth represented by the expansion and improvements in the distribution system, and mainly by the investments made in plants that started operating, others that started to be built and still in the development of new projects”, explained the president Alderi of Prado at Creral’s general meeting last week.

The cooperative ended 2022 with R$ 15 million in investments made. On the radar for investments this year in Rio Grande do Sul, in the area of energy distribution, are the construction of two 138 kV substations in Entre Rios do Sul and Sananduva, as well as the construction of a new 22-kilometer feeder to unify the Nonoai region, and another 26 kilometers of three-phase networks.

According to the cooperative’s press office, the resources foreseen for investments in 2023 also include the purchase of equipment for the future construction of a second substation in Sananduva and material for maintenance and improvement of the current distribution network maintained by Creral.

In the energy generation area, the cooperative will invest its resources in the execution of the project for a photovoltaic plant in Erechim, with a capacity of R$ 1.5 MW.

The projects that will demand the largest share of the cooperative’s resources this year are in Lages, Santa Catarina, where the PCH Santo Cristo, with 19 MW of power, is being built. There are also contributions to put into operation a CGH in Videira, Santa Catarina, and a photovoltaic plant, in Leme, in the interior of São Paulo.

Standby biomass plant

Last year, Creral even announced the possibility of initiating contributions to build a thermal plant in Capivari do Sul, to generate energy from the rice husk produced in the region, on the coast. The project initially budgeted at BRL 40 million, however, is kept out of investment plans for 2023 due to local infrastructure difficulties. According to the cooperative’s press office, while impasses regarding the connection of the future plant to the transmission network are not resolved.

When completed, UTE Litoral Norte will be the second venture of this type to be built by the cooperative. Since 2018, Creral operates the UTE São Sepé, with 8 MW of power. In the Capivari do Sul project, Creral the new plant also has the participation of the companies BR Energia, Minozzo Participações, Energia 203 and Enerbio.

Regarding alternative energy sources, Creral still intends to advance in 2023 in the feasibility studies for the future installation of a wind farm in Serra do Caverá, in Rosário do Sul. “Our work goes beyond obtaining licenses to measure the winds, we want other authorizations that will enable us to install wind turbines, and this is essential for the continuity of the project”, says the president of the cooperative, Alderi do Prado.

Wind measurements in Serra do Caverá began in January 2021 and should continue until the end of 2023. In December, Fepam delivered environmental licenses for the installation of two anemometry towers to measure winds in the region. The meetings to present the results of 2022 and projection of investments in 2023 reached around five thousand people after 20 pre-assemblies of the cooperative. It was two years ago, due to the pandemic, that Creral, which is headquartered in Erechim, could not bring its associates together in their communities for this presentation.

Creral has 7,880 associates and 15 plants in operation, with technical, financial and administrative management. According to the president, by 2025 the cooperative will reach 100 MW of installed capacity. “In the coming years we are going to experience even greater growth in generation and with the substations it will be another level of distribution, as we will have our own system without oscillations and power outages” points out Alderi do Prado.
