Total new cases stood at 1.5 million and deaths at 2.5 thousand
Around 1.5 million new cases of covid-19 were registered worldwide between 10 July and 6 August – an increase of 80% compared to the previous period. During the same 28 days, the virus also caused 2,500 deaths – a drop of 57% compared to the previous period. Data are from the World Health Organization (WHO).
The numbers show that, while several countries recorded a drop in new cases and deaths caused by the disease, the Western Pacific region identified an increase in new infections amid a reduction in deaths. As of August 6, more than 769 million cases have been reported globally, along with an estimated 6.9 million deaths.
“Currently reported cases do not accurately represent infection rates due to reduced testing and reporting globally. During that 28-day period, 44% (103 of 234) of countries reported at least one case to WHO – a proportion that has been declining since mid-2022.”
highlighted the entity in a statement.
