Contemporary art ‘Entidades’ highlights the façade of Teatro Amazonas

With a visit to the Lille Art Festival, in France, the work will be on display at the cultural space until August 12

Manaus (AM) – This Wednesday (08/02), the façade of Teatro Amazonas received the urban installation “Entidades”, by Roraima artist and indigenous activist Jaider Esbell, who died in 2021. The initiative is part of the Urban Art Circuit (Cura), a project created in Minas Gerais, which reaches the North of the country and is named Cura Amazônia.

Bringing the strength of the forest and the beings, with a strong influence of indigenous cosmology, the work presents Jaider’s research and poetics around the “Cobra Grande”, the great universal grandmother. Consisting of two inflatable snakes measuring 17 meters long and 1.5 meters wide each, the installation was created in 2020 for the 5th edition of Cura, in Belo Horizonte.

With the support of the Government of Amazonas, through the Secretariat of Culture and Creative Economy of Amazonas, Cura Amazônia decorates the entire central region of the city, also reaching the gables of the Rio Madeira and Cidade de Manaus buildings, which are transformed into a ‘canvas Gigantes’ to receive the creations of visual artists Denilson Baniwa and Olinda Silvano.

According to the Secretary of Culture, Marcos Apolo Muniz, the project highlights even more the beauty of Teatro Amazonas, valuing indigenous art, in addition to highlighting the work of artists from the Amazon region.

“The international reach of Cura Amazônia shows the prominence and importance of indigenous culture. Manaus being the setting for these interventions is yet another opportunity for us to emphasize the importance of this art”,

highlights Marcos Apolo.

The paintings can be seen from the lookout set up by the Cura, on the side of the Teatro Amazonas, in Largo São Sebastião, which provides a privileged view of the two buildings. According to the artistic director of the project, Janaína Macruz, in addition to the urban interventions, the project has a face-to-face program, with talks and shows, which take place between the 10th and 12th of August at Largo de São Sebastião and Casarão de Ideias .

“It is an honor to be in Manaus for the first time with this project, which for some editions has already portrayed the Amazon and its beauties. Cura is an international festival, one of the largest in Latin America, with female protagonism”,

says Janaína, who is one of the creators of the event.

Cura Amazônia is organized by Agência Urbana de Arte (AGUA), sponsored by 3M, with support from Tintas Coral, the Secretariat of Culture and Creative Economy of Amazonas, the Municipal Foundation for Culture, Tourism and Events (Manauscult), Centro Cultural Casarão de Ideas (CCCI) and the Center for Attention to Health and Safety at Work (CASST), in addition to local production by the collective Graffiti Queens and incentives from the Federal Law of Incentive to Culture.
