Consumption of Vehicle Natural Gas increased by 62% in Amazonas in 2022

The fuel supply network will be expanded in 2023 in the State

Manaus (AM) – Demand for vehicular natural gas increased by 62% in 2022 compared to 2021. The average volume traded last year reached 26.9 thousand cubic meters per day. The information is from the Gas Company of Amazonas (Cigás).

Also according to the Company, the fuel supply network will be expanded in 2023. Currently with five stations, Amazonas will have the implementation of three more stations in order to meet the growing demand for converted vehicles.

Demand from the industrial segment for natural gas was 173.2 thousand m³/d in 2022, a result 13% higher than that registered in 2021.

Alpha’s Engineering and Maintenance supervisor, Remiro Guirro, confirms the company’s monthly savings due to the use of natural gas. He also makes a point of highlighting the reduction of risks with supply and, furthermore, that there is no longer a need to manage storage – as was previously done – because the supply of fuel is channeled and continuous. In addition, according to him, the use of NG adds to the company’s productive differential, which is certified by ISO 14001, an international standard that specifies Environmental Management System requirements.

The thermoelectric segment continues to be the main consumer of NG supplied by the concessionaire. The fuel is used in thermoelectric plants that generate electricity to supply the population of Manaus and the municipalities of Anamã, Anori, Caapiranga, Coari and Codajás. This segment alone consumed, on average, just over 4 million cubic meters per day (m³/d) in 2022.

Advantages of Natural Gas

Savings provided to users is the main advantage of natural gas. Data from the National Agency of Petroleum, Natural Gas and Biofuels (ANP), in the period from January 1st to 7th of this year, indicate that the use of fuel, in Amazonas, in industries can generate savings of up to 61%; up to 33% in the vehicle segment; and up to 55% in the commercial segment.

Another aspect worth mentioning is the versatility of the fuel’s applicability, which can be used to generate electricity and steam, to heat ovens and dryers, as raw material, to air-condition environments, cook food, supply fleets of vehicles, forklifts, among others.

The consumption of natural gas also provides an environmental benefit. Joining the NG, in Manaus, represented a 73% reduction in pollution caused by the burning of liquid fuels and a 55% reduction in the emission of greenhouse gases (methane and carbon dioxide). This data was proven through research produced by Green Ocean Amazon.
