The Abras (Association of Supermarkets of Brazil) Abras, reported this Thursday (23) that household consumption in January rose 1.07% over a year earlier, but retreated 14.8% over the busy month of December.
“Consumption was positive even with all the occurrences of January”, said the vice-president of Abras, Marcio Milan, to journalists. He referred to the attacks in Brasília on January 8 and the crisis at Americanas, episodes that generated “a certain instability in general” in the sector.
Regarding the retailer’s judicial recovery request, Milan stated that “it brought a concern as a whole in the supply chains, but quickly things were moving forward”.
The entity’s expectation for growth in 2023 is 2.5% with a positive bias, said Milan, citing among the factors the increase in the minimum wage to R$1,302 and the readjustment already promised by the federal government to R$1,320 in May.
“The trend is for consumption to remain positive, with the increase in the minimum wage naturally benefiting,” said Milan.
