The retreat comes from pessimism in relation to the coming months. Brazilian consumers started 2023 with a drop in confidence in January due to pessimism about the coming months, showed data from the Getúlio Vargas Foundation released this Wednesday (25). FGV’s Consumer Confidence Index (ICC) fell by 2.2 points in the month, reaching 85.8 points. “The result reflects the pessimism in relation to the coming months, although families with lower purchasing power still remain optimistic”, highlighted in a note the coordinator of the surveys, Viviane Seda Bittencourt. “The perception of the current situation does not change much in relation to previous months, that is, there is a slowdown in the job market, indebtedness and high interest rates that continue to reduce purchase intentions in the coming months”, she added. The Current Situation Index (ISA) rose slightly from 70.9 in December to 71.1 in January, while the Expectations Index (IE) dropped 3.6 points to 96.7 points, returning to a level below neutrality.
