Combating the illegal practice of medicine can be strengthened in the Amazon

amazon – Cases of people pretending to be fake doctors in the Amazon have gained the spotlight in the main newspapers and show the importance of combating the illegal practice of medicine.

Plate 01 – Renewed Experience, which competes for the choice of effective and alternate members of the Regional Council of Medicine of the State of Amazonas (CRM), presented among the 21 proposals for the medical class the creation of the Commission to Combat the Illegal Exercise of the Profession.

Chapa 01’s proposal is based on the Medical Act Law (federal law 12.842/2013), which regulates professional activity in the country and establishes limits on the performance of professionals with other training. The objective is to raise awareness, alert and investigate the actions of professionals not qualified in the State.

“Denunciations grow according to the intensity of inspection. The proposal to create a commission is to provoke even more speed in the analysis of cases so that they are investigated with rigor”,

says Jorge Akel, physician member of Chapa 1.

One of the cases that gained repercussions this year was that of a woman who pretended to be a doctor in Parintins after using the CRM of a professional from Pernambuco. Even without being qualified, she attended to at least eight children for 10 days in the intensive care area for newborns at Jofre Cohen Hospital.

Last month, a 29-year-old man, who posed as a doctor to obtain financial advantages, was arrested in Coari. The suspect presented a fake CRM card to apply blows to commercial establishments such as bakeries, drugstores, construction material stores and financial institutions.

The commission will have a new tool for denouncing and guiding doctors. Members will also visit health units to monitor false professionals who put society and the credibility of the profession at risk.

“We also propose to create a Commission for the Defense of Medical Prerogatives to guarantee the free practice of medicine. It is important to understand that when we guarantee this, we are also benefiting the Amazonian population, which will be accompanied by a professional protected with all his skills”,

explains Juliana Tapajós, a member of Chapa 1.

Election

On the 14th and 15th of August, there will be a vote to choose the effective and alternate members of the CRM. Among the proposals of Chapa 01 – Renewed Experience, there are also: the creation of the School of Medical Ethics (Educa-Cremam); the creation of a committee to supervise the practice of medicine; promotion of medical scientific research in the Amazon and the creation of a commission for medical self-care.

The digital presence of physicians is also the basis of one of the proposals aimed at educating.

“We propose to establish direct communication with doctors who use this tool as the main form of dissemination to make social media a safe handling environment”,

defends Leonardo Gobira, doctor member of Chapa 1.

The electoral process takes place in all CRMs in the country and is coordinated by the Federal Council of Medicine (CFM). The winners will form the institution’s board of directors from October 1, 2023, and will serve a five-year term. Each slate is made up of 40 physicians, 20 of whom are candidates for titular councilors and 20 for alternate councillors.

Voting will be conducted exclusively over the internet, from 8 am to 8 pm, and participation is mandatory for physicians under 70 years old.

“It is important to remind every medical colleague not to stop voting. The election is extremely necessary for the medical profession to continue to be strengthened”,
