The growing quality of coffee produced in the region of Espírito Santo mountains has increased the search for coffee agrotourism in the region.
Famous for being home to the Pedra Azul State Park – whose name comes from a rock formation 1,822 meters high–, the area around the municipalities of Domingos Martins and Venda Nova do Imigrante is already considered a reference in rural tourism.
To the point that, on July 25, President Lula sanctioned a law that confers the title of national capital of agritourism to Venda Nova do Imigrante.
Tourism in the region, however, is still more focused on other products, such as socol – pork loin sausage–, sweets, strawberries, cachaça, liqueurs, etc. But little by little, coffee is gaining ground.
One of the pioneers of coffee agrotourism in the area is Fazenda Camocim, where the famous jacu coffee is produced. It is possible to schedule guided tours of the property and taste the coffees in an elegant coffee shop, with glass walls that provide a complete view of the agroforest in which the beans are grown.
Two kilometers from there is the property of Vagner Uliana, a micro producer who cultivates an area of just 1 hectare and reached third place in a competition that evaluates the best coffees in Brazil.
On the property, he built the Contos do Ninho coffee shop, which serves hundreds of tourists, especially on weekends, and the Villa Uliana inn, where the guest is received with a French press inside the room – alongside a coffee produced on the farm itself. , Of course.
Breakfast at the inn is another factor that attracts coffee enthusiasts. This is because it is served in the house’s cafeteria, where the guest has a menu of very high quality specialty coffees, ranging from very well-extracted cappuccinos to espressos and strained coffees prepared on demand, on demand – a treatment that not even high-end hotels are used to. to offer.
The initiative has been so successful that Uliana and his wife, Bia Fernandes, are already building a second inn, at the back of the property, which will be even more focused on coffee agrotourism.
There, the idea is that the guest not only has a French press, but several methods of preparing coffee inside the room, overlooking the coffee plantations.
The growth of coffee tourism has encouraged other farmers. A little further south, in the area known as Vale do Caxixe, in the municipality of Castelo, producer Carlos Alberto Altoé built a small coffee shop/roaster within the property.
On site, he welcomes visitors who come to him in search of learning more about the stages of cultivation with a good coffee.
In addition to learning the whole process that the fruit goes through from the tree to the cup, visitors can take home packets of coffee entirely produced right there on the farm.
Finally, a tip for anyone planning a trip to the region: before going up the mountain, it is worth visiting the Kaffa coffee shop, which works together with the Trentino roasting plant, in Vitória.
The owner of the coffee shop, Jonathan Piazarolo, knows coffee from the Espírito Santo mountains like few others – and he roasts them exquisitely. At Kaffa, in addition to drinking great coffee extracted using different methods, you can take home some of the best beans produced in Espírito Santo.
